The very first edition of this poultry contest dates back to the 24th December 1865 in Pont-de-Vaux. The breeders of Bresse enter their best trussed-up birds and are judged by a jury of experts, professionals and chefs. The producers of the best birds will receive the Grands Prix d'Honneur (prizes of honour).
After the prize-giving ceremony, there is a market where the fine birds of Bresse are sold. Chickens, capons, turkeys and poularde chickens are on sale, much to the delight of food lovers and experts.
There are 3 other such competitions in Bresse, in Bourg-en-Bresse, Montrevel-en-Bresse and Louhans.
