Day 3
Chorey-les-Beaune > Beaune
Step 6
Hôtel-Dieu - Hospices de Beaune
Owned by the Hospices Civils de Beaune, this remarkably well-preserved heritage site was founded in 1443 thanks to the patronage of Nicolas Rolin, Chancellor to the Duke of Burgundy, and his last wife Guigone de Salins. Conceived as a "palace for the poor", the charitable institution - entrusted by the donors to the good care of the Dames Hospitalières - remained in operation until the early 1970s, before a modern hospital, better suited to developments in healthcare, was built on the outskirts of Beaune's historic centre.
Known for its polychrome glazed tile roofs, the Hôtel-Dieu is one of the few remaining examples of late medieval civil architecture, and a major place of remembrance of hospital history. As you wander through the rooms, the centuries pass by, from the 15th to the 21st century: Let yourself be surprised by the ambience of the Salle des Pôvres or the Salle Saint-Hugues, discover the collection of furniture and tapestries, the medical instruments and the evolution of care practices; also take the time to observe each of the facades of the Cour d'Honneur, to contemplate the polyptych of the Last Judgement by Rogier van der Weyden or to sit down in the courtyard of the founders recently planted with the garden "Échos Polychromes", a contemporary tribute to the garden of the simple...
Throughout 2024, we invite you to discover or rediscover the Hôtel-Dieu, whose programme of events on the theme of CHARITY is a tribute to all those who have worked and continue to work with the sick, from the hospital sisters to our carers, from donors to benefactors. Exhibitions, workshops, shows and concerts invite you to share in the history of this centuries-old building.
> 2024 cultural programme: exhibitions, workshops, shows and concerts
> Exhibition "The Hôpital de la Sainte-Trinité or Hospice de la Charité: an institution for orphans".
> "The benefactors of the Hôtel-Dieu or the spirit of charity" tour with mediation booklet.
> Self-guided tour with audioguide - 10 languages available for adults, 2 languages for audio-description and a children's tour in 4 languages.
> Guided discovery tour "Once upon a time at Hôtel-Dieu: Charité 2024".
> Unusual guided tour "Behind the scenes at Hôtel-Dieu: a hospital and winegrowing heritage" Regards croisés itinerary
> 15-minute flash tours - free - 10am & 5pm

Musée des Beaux-Arts de Beaune
The Musée des Beaux-Arts in Beaune is devoting a new exhibition entitled "Destins croisés, 300 ans de génie Beaunois" (Crossed destinies, 300 years of Beaune genius), which highlights more than twenty great historical figures who have contributed to the development and influence of the capital of Burgundy wines.
Through a thematic tour, the exhibition highlights the singular itineraries of more than twenty great historical figures linked to Beaune. Artists, actors, musicians, inventors, agronomists, politicians and historians from the eighteenth to the twentieth centuries are evoked through a hundred or so objects from Beaune's municipal collections and private collections, including the Fallot mustard factory.
In addition to the famous names, the exhibition allows visitors to discover or rediscover the legacy of Beaulieu personalities who left their mark on their time through their commitment, talent or innovations. Mathematician Gaspard Monge, physiologist Etienne Jules Marey, painter Félix Ziem and actress Marie Favart are just some of the key figures.
This retrospective, which is by no means exhaustive, honours some of those who have contributed to the development and influence of Beaune. Paintings, sculptures, models, archive documents and video clips are brought together to illustrate the life and work of men and women from a wide variety of backgrounds, some famous, some little-known, whose legacy has enriched our shared heritage.
"Destins croisés" is also an opportunity for Beaune to pay tribute to the Beaune philosopher, sociologist and anthropologist Bruno Latour, who died in 2022, and whose abundant archives recently joined the municipal collections.
